It is always wise to set up a routine when you are caring for a bedridden loved one at home. The routine can be from different aspects to ensure their comfort, health, and overall well-being. Establishing a thorough checking routine is paramount to managing their medical needs and preventing potential complications. In this guide, we will walk you through 4 essential steps to set up a comprehensive care routine for bedridden individuals.

Bedridden Care Steps: 1. Care of Skin:

While moisturizing is important for those with dry skin, excessive moisture can contribute to skin breakdown. Keep the skin clean and dry, and avoid prolonged positioning on areas of redness.

If it is unavoidable for the redness area to contact the bed, consider cushioning the affected area with some dressing products.

2. Turn Frequently:

Reduce interface pressure and maintain circulation by repositioning the patient every two hours. This is important to help reduce the risk of developing a pressure ulcer which is one of the most burdening barriers for most of the family members taking care of their loved ones.

Remember, always monitor the skin condition at each turn to catch any issues early on!

3. Support Surface Identification:

Choose an appropriate support surface for the patient, such as a dynamic support device or alternative mattresses, to reduce the risk of pressure injuries.

We always spend time introducing alternating pressure mattresses to our clients. It is so underused but its role in the prevention of pressure ulcers is so good!

4. Keep Moving!

Encourage movement and exercise to reduce spasticity and maintain the range of motion. Regularly review medications with a pharmacist to minimize the sedating effects during the day.

Regular movement contributes to improved cardiovascular health, muscle strength, joint flexibility, and overall mental well-being. However, as individuals age, they may encounter challenges such as reduced balance, muscle weakness, joint stiffness, and other mobility issues that can compromise their safety.
